Fellowship Training in Gynaecologic Oncology
This was a two year fellowship in Gynaecologic oncology at the University of Pretoria and a Certificate exam with the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.
The core of the training was surgical techniques for the different gynaecological cancers at Steve Biko Academic and Kalafong hospitals. This included:
- Radical hysterectomy and lymph node dissection for cervical cancer
- Radical vulvectomy for vulvar cancer
- Staging laparotomy for ovarian cancer
- TAH, BSO and lymph node dissection for endometrial cancer
I also learnt and performed and taught other gynaecological procedures like vaginal hysterectomy and total laparoscopic hysterectomy. I also assisted at a laparoscopic radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer.
Office procedures included colposcopy, LLETZ and hysteroscopy
I was involved in pre-operative and post-operative care of gynaecological cancer patients in clinics and wards.
I attended weekly multi-disciplinary tumor board clinics attended by radiation and medical oncologists.
I also carried out a study on “the role of Human papillomavirus and highly-active anti-retroviral therapy in HIV infected women” which is in the process of publication.
